Jesus: Our Mighty God & Everlasting Father

”For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.  The government will rest on his shoulders.  And he will be called:  Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father . . .” Isaiah 9:6 (NLT)

I’ve been trying to figure out what to get my husband for Christmas.  Why are men so hard to shop for??  I was thinking back to my favorite gift I’ve given him, which was a beautiful acoustic guitar that he’d been wanting for a long time.  I set aside my money for awhile and then surprised him with it on Christmas morning.  I can still see the look of complete shock and happy surprise on his face!  I’ll never top that one, so I might as well not even try.  It looks like he’s going to get socks again this year. :)

As I’ve been preparing for this week’s blog, there is no doubt in my mind what God’s favorite gift to us was: His Son Jesus.  God gave His own Son to us!  That’s just how much He loves us.  Here in this verse we see Jesus called “Mighty God”, because He fully possessed a divine nature, the same as His Father did.  Remember how Jesus calmed the storm at sea in an instant?  In Jesus we have been given a Mighty God who has power over anything we may face in life.  You can stand on that Truth and let it become your new reality.  And in coming to us, Jesus became also human so that He could grow up and die in our place to pay the price for our sins.  All so that we could be reunited with God, know and experience His great love for us, and spend eternity with Him.  It was through His death and resurrection that He obtained for us eternal life.  By providing us with eternal life, Jesus is called our “Everlasting Father”, which in the original language means either “Father of Eternity” or the author of eternity.  I love how John Gill describes what Jesus gives to us as our Everlasting Father: “he as such supplies them with everlasting provisions, he clothes them with everlasting raiment, he gives them an everlasting portion, promotes them to everlasting honour, saves them with an everlasting salvation, bearing an everlasting love to them.”1  His reign will last forever and ever, and His blessings to us will never end!

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure that the gift of Jesus can’t be topped.  But the awesome thing is that this gift keeps on giving the more and more we discover about Him.  It will always be as if we’re receiving it for the first time on Christmas morning!  Pretty good, right?  We can experience every day what it’s like to have Jesus as our Mighty God and Everlasting Father.  We can know and sense His divine power working in our lives, and we can receive blessing after blessing from Him and be sure of the promise of eternity spent with Him.  Enjoy the gift of Jesus this Christmas season!  Take some time to unwrap and learn more about Him, and then discover what a precious gift He is.
