Got Bread?

Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 (NLT)

Any carb-lovers out there??  Low-carb diets just don’t work for me cause I love me some carbs!!  There’s nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread, and there’s nothing like the tasting of it!  As a child I’d save my once a month treat to “hot lunch” for the day they had the fresh baked cinnamon rolls.  Mmm, mmm, those lunch ladies sure knew how to bake!  I still can’t find a cinnamon roll that will beat theirs, but I’ve taste-tested many to try. :)

Just as there’s nothing like eating fresh baked bread, there’s nothing like going to Jesus, our “Bread of Life”, to satisfy our souls.  When describing Himself as our “Bread of Life”, Jesus is letting us know that it is He and He alone that can satisfy the longing in our hearts.  Do you remember the following verse that David writes in Psalms 42?  “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”   Each one of us has this longing David is describing, don’t we?  I remember in the midst of my struggle with food obsession the longing was at its strongest.  I mistakenly kept turning to the bread of bakeries instead of the Bread of Life to satisfy my soul.  I was miserable and aching inside, and kept turning to something that only brought pleasure and eased the pain in the moment.  Eventually Jesus’ words in John 4 became true for me, just like they did for the woman at the well: “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” John 4:14

What’s the plain and simple Truth here?  “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.  Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”  Believing and accepting Jesus and what He has done for us is the only thing that will truly satisfy our souls.  Through Him we have the love, forgiveness, hope, and eternal life we are all longing for.  He is our Bread of Life.  Are you longing for Him today?  He promises us this in Jeremiah 29:13: “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”  The key to finding satisfaction in Him depends on our whole-hearted devotion to it.  Are you whole-heartedly devoted to looking for Him, to seeking Him?  Let go of the other things you are holding on to, make it a priority to spend time with Him and learn more about Him, and you will discover the Bread that truly satisfies.
